Ancient redwood

Based on the color of the wood and asphalt patch job on the Newton B. Drury Parkway, I would bet that this redwood was one of the victims of the New Year's Eve wind storm.

I stood next to it and I would estimate the diameter is about 11 feet. That's huge. Redwood National Park would have been a scary place to be that morning.

Big Lagoon 10.16.06

For some reason I'm always intrigued by the lights, colors and shadows looking east at Big Lagoon during my Monday morning trip to Smith River – so much so that this is the third such photo I've posted on this blog of the view from the little turnout near the U.S. Highway 101/Big Lagoon bridge.

Pinky

Pinky was liberated from the Humboldt County Animal Shelter two and a half weeks ago and is now residing at our secret compound in McKinleyville. Welcome aboard, Pinky!

Pinky was the name given by the shelter staff and we were adamant about changing it. After all, what kind of name is Pinky for a black cat?

But, 2 1/2 weeks have gone by and we're still calling her Pinky.

(Note: This posting officialy makes my blog a "kitty blog," which as I understand it is a derogatory term for blogs filled with trivial rants and photos of people's cats.)
